Suita rockowa

Suita rockowa – długi utwór rockowy lub kilka połączonych utworów, zwykle z gatunku rocka progresywnego lub symfonicznego, składający się w większej części z krótszych fragmentów, mniej lub bardziej spójnych stylistycznie. Większość (choć nie wszystkie) mają przemyślaną i jasną konstrukcję, na wzór suit przełomu XIX/XX wieku: zawiązanie tematu, rozwijanie, punkt lub punkty kulminacyjne i rozwiązanie. Wzorcowe pod tym względem są suity Yes i Pink Floyd. Suita rockowa jest zwykle utworem tematycznym. Może być zarówno instrumentalna jak i wokalno-instrumentalna.

Gatunek ten powstał na początku lat 60. XX wieku w Anglii w związku z tworzącym się tam nurtem rocka artystycznego, a później psychodelicznego i progresywnego. Suita rockowa jako pojedynczy rozbudowany utwór narodziła się z zamiłowania do tworzenia coraz to dłuższych, malowniczych kompozycji (początkowo instrumentalnych) i nadania temu cech programu. Jako pionierskie pod tym względem są Ars Longa Vita Brevis The Nice, In Held Twas in I Procol Harum i A Saucerful of Secrets Pink Floyd. Innym czynnikiem stymulującym rozwój suit były oczekiwania publiczności, która już od połowy lat 60. przychodziła na koncerty bardziej aby posłuchać muzyki, niż potańczyć przy niej^[1].

W następnych dekadach forma ta przeniosła się na grunt nowo powstających, alternatywnych nurtów w muzyce rockowej (rock gotycki, heavy metal), ale też znalazła zastosowanie w rozwijającej się muzyce elektronicznej (p. Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream). Jednak po rewolucji punkowej zainteresowanie tworzeniem wieloczęściowych suit znacznie osłabło. Pewien jej renesans obserwuje się od końca lat 90.
